Austin B. Turner III was a champion for rural Iowa. A past resident of Corning, he was one of the founding members of SWICO and worked tirelessly to encourage regional collaboration among leaders in the area and to maintainIn and active presence among legislators and policy-makers.

In recognition of his life-long dedication, commitment, and service to southwest Iowa and the state, the Southwest Iowa Coalition created the annual Austin B. Turner III Leadership & Memorial Scholarship Award in 2004. Members of the Southwest Iowa Coalition are encouraged to nominate worthy individuals who, by their dedication, commitment and service to their city, region and state, make rural Iowa a better place to live.

The Leadership Award is accompanied by a traveling plaque to which name plates are added as recipients are announced. A scholarship of $500 ($250 from SWICO and a matching $250 from the Turner family) is awarded to a qualified senior from the community in which the recipient lives.

Recipients since the annual award was instituted have been:

2004 | George Maher, Red Oak
2005 | Doug Sickler, Corning
2006 | Larry Winum, Glenwood
2007 | Steve Adams, Red Oak
